Relatively low crop prices over the past two years, as well as regional weather adversity, has been the catalyst for the passage of "ad hoc" emergency relief. This paper examines the economic and financial status of 41 representative panel farms over the 1999-2002 period. When forecasting through the life of the 1996 Farm Bill, the representative crop farms are assessed by Texas A&M's Agricultural and Food Policy Center to be in the weakest condition observed over the last decade for liquidity and the related need to refinance. The paper lays out the economic arguments in favor of the establishment of farmer-owned brands in midwestern agriculture and presents four case studies based on successful efforts in this area in the United States and European Union. The case studies involve Parma Ham, Brunello di Montalcino wine, Vidalia onions, and a third-party verification organization. The studies show that these brands can be profitable for farmers and emphasize the importance of restricting the supply of any successful brand. One of the case studies shows that this type of supply control can conflict with antitrust regulations. O milho é uma das culturas mais versáteis na propriedade agrícola, característica que se deve aos seus múltiplos usos. É insumo básico nas cadeias produtivas de suínos e aves e também na bovinocultura de corte e leite, podendo ser utilizado como silagem. Na alimentação humana, pode ser consumido de forma in natura como milho verde ou seco, na elaboração de bolos e outros alimentos. Por fim, pode simplesmente ser comercializado após atingir seu ponto de colheita. No contexto da agricultura familiar, além de representar importante fonte de renda, o milho pode significar uma alternativa para garantir segurança alimentar.
